⚽️ Another great couple of days at Fulham FC Foundation ⚽️

Our pre-freshman business students spent day one learning about the history of @fulhamfc and some of the social issues particular to its surrounding London boroughs. They then developed action plans to combat these using football as a medium, working on these in their free time and then giving 20-minute presentations to their peers and a panel of judges on day two! It’s always humbling to see just how mature and nuanced our students’ reflections can be, but this group comprises mostly 18-year-olds, which makes it all the more impressive! Thanks to Richard, Lauren, Richmond and Zac for all your advice and feedback, and just generally making those two days at @fulhamfcfound impactful and memorable.

Our Music, Arts and Culture class were very brave

Our Music, Arts and Culture class were very brave last week and scaled all 528 steps to the top of @stpaulscathedrallondon - the view was worth it! Believe it or not, at 365 feet, St Paul’s was the tallest building in London until 1963 when the Millbank Tower stole its title. The last 50 years have certainly seen some changes to the skyline, but that’s been the case for centuries, so we can agree with 6th century Greek philosopher Heraclitus when he said: the only constant in life is change! It is said that “London will never be finished” so if you’re looking for the ‘perfect’ photo without a load of scaffolding and cranes and flappy bits of plastic, you’ll be waiting a very long time! But those imperfections are part of London too, so we can’t ignore them.

Our ‘intro to global leadership’ pre-freshmen

Our ‘intro to global leadership’ pre-freshmen glammed up for the West End last night! 💫 They attended ‘Shifters’, a play about memory, love, race, family, belonging, pain, death, expectation, joy, laughter...life! It was written by black British female playwright Benedict Lombe, and stars the phenomenal Heather Agyepong and Tosin Cole. The students loved it and one was even heard to say “I think I might be into theatre now!” We like to introduce students to the unfamiliar, and in this case to challenge the idea of theatre always being stuffy, boring, mannered, old-fashioned, unintelligible…ie not for them! So a comment like that is music to our ears!

Yesterday we welcomed students from two more programmes: Music, Arts and Culture AND pre-freshman Introduction to Global Leadership. They are here for a mere 3 weeks, but we’ve jam packed their schedules, worry not!

Music students will be attending two @bbc_proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, a Hip Hop Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the Royal Opera House, Cabaret at the @kitkatclubldn, spending the day in the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool; visiting @westminsterabbeylondon, @stpaulscathedrallondon, King’s College Cambridge, @handelandhendrix…

Pre-freshmen will be taking the boat to Greenwich, having a leadership and resilience workshop, visiting the Bridge Institute, spending two days at @fulhamfcfound, hearing firsthand how the Windrush scandal impacts mental health, hearing from @bigissueuk Recruit, having a curator talk at the @hornimanmuseumgardens, visiting the Naomi Campbell exhibit at the @vamuseum…

We love having visitors to Great James Street…except when it’s @durs_eriksen!

Only joking of course (you know a British person likes you if they’re a bit mean to you 😆). Andreas was our assistant for three pre-pandemic summers during his break from university, and we always had great fun when he was around (and a mediocre cup of tea, let’s be honest). Andreas is now married, living and working in Seattle, and is expecting his first child 🤯 It was lovely to catch up, reminisce, and scoff the doughnuts he brought with him! (But we did miss Kalyn, who was our housing and programmes coordinator and fourth member of the dream team back then - next time!)

We couldn’t decide between a David Bowie and Rolling Stones walking tour for our @uohonors pre-freshmen, so we had @adamlondonguide do ‘em both! We were informed and entertained (and exercised) with a perfect balance of fun facts, social history and banging tunes (eg Bowie’s highly underrated Laughing Gnome. Ahem.)

Okay okay here’s the tea (geddit): we admit that we are obsessed with tea in the UK, but Brits rarely consume it in such an ostentatious and (let’s face it) classy way unless it’s a special occasion (or they’re minor royalty) 🧐 In the case of this relatively short throwback, you’ll be pleased to hear it’s the former. Spring quarter students, staff and faculty had a fab time marking the end of term at the Bond Street Tea Rooms - just the right balance of fancy and fun! 🫖🍰🥪🎩💃

Today we welcomed FOUR new programmes to a rather warm London: 2 pre-freshmen, 1 politics and an art and architecture (not in a pear tree - wow the jokes just keep coming!)

We’re excited for these students to get stuck in to some (though we say it ourselves) really exciting courses, exploring and befriending London as they go.

• definitely NOT having their fish and chips and ice creams stolen by herring gulls in Brighton 🍦
• having a walking tour of Brick Lane, discussing its many layers of history and current regeneration (/gentrification)
• and of course…who could forget the boat trip!

• a morning at the London office of Oregonian ad agency Wieden + Kennedy 👟
• watching some incredible tennis at the Wimbledon championships 🎾
• seeing THE king and queen in Edinburgh the day before the general election 👑👑
• a walking tour of Westminster and visit to the Churchill War Rooms ♟️
• seeing James Cordon live on stage with Anna Maxwell Martin in a new play, ‘the Constituent’ at the Old Vic theatre 🎭
• a very cool and very pink guest lecture from the inimitable ‘Don Draper of British advertising’ Robin Wight MBE 🩷
• a tour of the Tower of London 🏰
• a morning hanging out with the cool folks at Hoffman PR 😎
• enjoying blue skies in Brighton 🏳️‍🌈
• the boat trip of course (in very fetching matching tee-shirts!) ⚓️

The trouble with our summer programmes is that they’re just tooooooo packed full of amazing stuff and it’s hard to make time to tell you about it!

In reverse order, last night we said a fond farewell to our journalism students. Their programme was 5 weeks of amazing classes, guest speakers, visits and altogether awesome opportunities. Highlights include (but are certainly not limited to!):
• a gentle spin cycle on the London Eye during orientation (seems so long ago!) 🎡
• a day trip to the quaint town of Deal on the Kent coast for its music and arts festival and some proper fish and chips on the beach 🎶
• a behind the scenes tour of the Wimbledon press office (as well as being at the tennis Championships themselves for the day) 🎾
• a not-available-to-the-public visit to BBC Broadcasting House and its iconic newsroom 📣
• attending the West End musical Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club 🎭
• watching England beat New Zealand at the Women’s International T20 at Lord’s 🏏
• checking out what it’s like to work at Conde Nast [insert emoji for mass media here! 🤔]
• having a tour and journalist Q&A at the Guardian newspaper 🗞️
• creating a 10-minute broadcast quality news show at professional recording studios 🎥
• visiting the Tate to write a review of the Expressionism exhibition 🖼️
• getting emotional at the end of programme boat trip 🥹 🦈

Mary accidentally watched the London Marathon on her way to an antiques fair yesterday afternoon - generally speaking she prefers looking at old wooden objects than being a spectator of sport events, but how cool to just stumble upon such an iconic world-famous event without even trying. Our Health, Cognition and Wellbeing class attended a lecture at the @roysocmed last week with their prof, Dr Antonio Fidalgo. ‘Medicine and the Media’ was led by medical journalist, TV personality and practising NHS physician, Dr Hilary Jones and explored how health information is “disseminated, interpreted, and sometimes misunderstood by the public”. A subject that will never not be interesting and relevant!

🚨 Some more important news (even more so than Amanda’s mum’s woolly jumper, one might argue): we have a new programmes coordinator! 🚨

Daniel Stratford joined the team towards the end of last month and is settling in splendidly. He has a BA in business and Spanish, a Masters in international business and even spent a year studying abroad in South Carolina, so knows firsthand how it feels to be out of your comfort zone in an unfamiliar country, albeit back-to-front! He also loves travelling and supporting his local football team @watfordfcofficial! Welcome Daniel 🥳

But of course, “in with the new” often means “out with the old”, so to speak! Noemie said farewell to GEO at the end of January and has moved on to a well-deserved promotion in pastures new at @imperialcollege. Farewell Noémie - come back and see us soon (preferably with some of your amazing homemade bread! 😆)
